Kristina Syverson is a licensed clinical mental health counselor, consultant, and supervisor. Kristina earned a Master’s Degree in clinical mental health from the University of Vermont in 2017, marking the start of a second career. As a clinician, Kristina strives to support others in creating and maintaining a quality of life based on their personal hopes, goals, and challenges, often addressing severely painful and life interfering problems or events.
Kristina specializes in the treatment of severe depression and anxiety, complex trauma and PTSD, personality disorders, grief and loss, stress management and life transitions, as well as treating problematic issues that increase suffering in daily life. Kristina has received intensive training in dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) and uses this modality to guide her work with the clients, supervisees, and agencies with whom she works. DBT is a behavioral treatment that focuses on emotion regulation in order to decrease suffering and increase interpersonal effectiveness, develop and maintain healthy relationships, and create a life experienced as ‘worth living,’ according to an individual’s values and goals.
Kristina provides individual outpatient treatment to adults and periodically provides group support by running coping skills groups to assist community members in learning and mastering the skills to successfully navigate the emotions and challenges of daily living. Kristina also provides clinical consultation to various community agencies located throughout the state of Vermont. Through this service she supports clinical teams with clients that have challenging presentations that interfere with the ability of both the team and the individual to problem solve or be effective. Additionally, Kristina provides clinical supervision to therapists working towards licensure. Please email Kristina if interested in any of these services.
As a former competitive athlete and coach, Kristina combines her training and experiences to provide sports psychology consultation. Kristina works with local athletes, teams, and coaches, at both the collegiate and high school levels, with the goal of supporting a mentally and physically healthy athlete and team sport culture, focusing on the mental game to enhance performance and manage the psychological aspects of an individual’s sport, including increasing skills to learn techniques that improve performance and confidence, coping with stress and anxiety, and navigating and recovering from injuries. In addition to consultation, Kristina has developed both an “Injured Athlete Protocol” and a “Post-career Transition Protocol” to assist athletes in navigating the change and loss that accompanies both these major events in the life of a competitive athlete. Please email Kristina if interested in support as an individual athlete or coach.
Prior to her psychotherapy training and practice, Kristina was a nationally certified educator, developing programs to increase adolescent success in both academics and quality of life, as well as assisting families in supporting their children by increasing supportive involvement and reinforcing effective communication. She earned her Secondary Education Degree from the State University of New York at Oswego. (1993)
Kristina accepts most insurances including: Blue Cross / Blue Shield, MVP, United Healthcare, Optum Healthcare, Cigna, and Medicaid of Vermont.
