Dr. Chalmer Offers a New Self-Paced Relationship Course for Couples Who Want a Clear Way Forward

Feb 25, 2026 | Blog, News & Events

When relationships feel strained, distant, or confusing, many couples aren’t sure what kind of help makes sense.

Over the years in my work as a couples therapist, I’ve found that understanding what’s going on in a relationship—getting some clarity—is a crucial first step.

There’s often a light-bulb moment that happens for couples in their first session with me, when we’ve talked about what I call the passion paradox.

Relationships need stability—which is all about security, reliability, and predictability. And relationships need intimacy—which is all about feeling alive, growing into unfamiliar territory, and risking honesty. The paradox is that these needs are inherently in conflict. In the interest of stability, couples often steer clear of rocking the boat too much—which means they don’t risk intimacy.

Just understanding that paradox often opens the doors of possibility. That’s why, when I work with couples, we talk about it in the very first session. Couples often tell me that they get a sense of hope just from knowing how normal this problem is.

And it occurred to me: What if couples could get that experience even before they start therapy? What if couples who aren’t even sure they want therapy—or couples where one of them is reluctant to try it—could gain that understanding?

That’s why I’ve created a new self-paced video course designed to help you slow down, understand your patterns, and begin shifting them — privately, and at your own pace.

The course is called The Passion Paradox: When You Feel Miles Apart and Still Love Each Other.

Who This Course Is For

This course may be helpful if you’re:

  • Feeling stuck or disconnected
  • Arguing more than you’d like
  • Unsure whether the relationship can improve
  • Wanting to strengthen an already solid relationship
  • Curious about doing meaningful work together without jumping immediately into therapy

The course draws on over 30 years of clinical experience working with couples, as well as ideas from my books and teaching.

It’s not a substitute for therapy when therapy is needed.
But it can be a thoughtful starting point—or a meaningful complement.

How It Works

The course consists of short video lessons and guided exercises that help you:

  • Recognize the tension between stability and intimacy
  • Identify what keeps certain patterns stuck
  • Get clarity about whether you want to work on it or call it quits
  • Create and implement specific action plans

You can work on it yourself, or together with your partner. You can move through it at your own pace. Some people finish the course in a day or two; others take time to let the ideas sink in, and work on it in stages over several weeks.

Not Sure Where to Start?

If you’re uncertain whether a course — or therapy — makes sense, I also offer a short, free Relationship Clarity Check.

It’s a 5–10 minute guided exercise designed to help you slow things down and see what’s actually happening in your relationship—and which way forward feels right.

You can access it at this link.
